Solid hardwood flooring is crafted entirely from hardwood milled from lumber. Being a natural material, hardwood responds to environmental changes such as moisture and temperature fluctuations, leading to shrinkage or expansion. Solid hardwood can be sanded and refinished multiple times over the years to maintain its appearance. However, it's not advisable for installation below ground level or in bathrooms due to its susceptibility to moisture.
Menlo Flooring specializes in offering both solid and ENGINEERED wood floors throughout the San Francisco Bay Area, covering areas from San Jose to San Francisco.
The primary difference between SOLID hardwood flooring and ENGINEERED hardwood flooring lies in their construction and properties.
SOLID hardwood flooring is crafted entirely from wood and typically ranges from 5/8" to 3/4" thick. Due to its solid composition, solid floors can be sanded and refinished numerous times throughout their lifespan.
On the other hand, ENGINEERED hardwood flooring consists of a layer (veneer) of real wood glued to layers of wood underneath, usually plywood. This layered construction provides excellent stability over time. Engineered floors can usually only be sanded and refinished one or two times.
The best species for solid hardwood floors depend on factors such as durability, appearance, and personal preference.
Popular choices include oak for its strength and attractive grain patterns, maple for its uniform appearance, hickory for its durability and distinct grain, walnut for its rich tones, and cherry for its warm hues.
Each species offers unique characteristics, allowing homeowners to select the best fit for their style and needs.
